“I want to see sport move forward in Seychelles” says Captain Moise
Marathon runner and Special Unit Officer, Captain Iven Moise, met with the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie, at State House this morning, in recognition of his recent achievement at the KFC Ultimate Marathon in Mauritius.
At the KFC Ultimate Marathon held on 19 April, Captain Moise won his category and placed third overall in the 42 km race.
During their brief meeting, President Herminie congratulated Captain Moise on his achievement and commended him as a young role model, highlighting the exemplary discipline demonstrated in both professional career and his athletic journey.
Captain Moise spoke briefly about the competition, noting that this was his first marathon and that the preparation was demanding. Nonetheless, he expressed pride in his achievements.
The discussion also addressed the development of sport in Seychelles, the availability of facilities to support young athletes, and the broader social challenges affecting youth today. Captain Moise highlighted the need for investment in scientific equipment, such as tools to measure VO₂ max, which assess how efficiently an athlete’s lungs, heart, and muscles use oxygen. He explained that such data can help athletes understand their performance benchmarks and adjust their training programmes for professional competition, including at Olympic level.
Captain Moise also shared that he works with a group of 20 young athletes through his club, Moise Fitness Club (MFC), which aims to bring youth together through discipline and sport. President Herminie enquired how he could support the club training efforts. Captain Moise noted that training sessions are held every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at Stad Popiler and the Anse Etoile Football Court, with additional sessions conducted at various locations around the island. He explained that the objective of the club is to encourage young people to adopt discipline as a foundation for life, emphasising that this is key to achieving any goal. He also mentioned receiving support from the military facility for medical testing and that discussions are ongoing with Sacos Insurance regarding life insurance coverage for youth members in case of injury.
In conclusion, President Herminie expressed his commitment to supporting the group, noting that such initiatives make the country proud when athletes succeed in competitions.
Captain Moise is set to travel to Kenya today, for two months of training in preparation for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August.
