World Press Freedom Day Message from the President of the Republic

No truth. No trust. No democracy.

In Seychelles, World Press Freedom Day, observed on 3 May, is more than a commemoration, it is a statement of principle. It reflects our commitment to openness, accountability, and the firm belief that an informed people is an empowered people. Across our islands, media professionals continue to serve with dedication and integrity, ensuring that accurate and timely information reaches the public.

This year marks significant milestones in our media landscape, highlighted by key celebrations within our state media institutions. A few days ago, Seychelles Nation marked 50 years of publication, underscoring the enduring role of the press in our national journey. More recently, the opening of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation’s new headquarters, SBC House, made possible with the valued support of the People’s Republic of China, represents a major step forward in modernising communication infrastructure and expanding national reach.

The re-establishment of the Information Department and the resumption of the Seychelles News Agency (SNA) further strengthen transparency and the flow of information between institutions and citizens. These steps restore important national platforms and reaffirm our government’s commitment to ensuring that they operate in a stable, professional, and non-partisan manner, in the public interest.

Seychelles has also moved from 45th to 35th place out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This progress reflects improving conditions for the media, where journalists are able to work with greater freedom and the press continues to be respected as a vital pillar of our democracy.

However, progress must not lead to complacency. The rapid rise of artificial intelligence and the widespread influence of social media are transforming the information landscape, bringing new risks, from misinformation to the erosion of public trust. These challenges require continued vigilance, responsibility, and a renewed commitment to ethical journalism and media literacy.

As we observe this day under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace,” one reality remains clear: peace, development, and democracy cannot exist without a free, independent, and responsible press.

The Government remains committed to safeguarding press freedom and working in partnership with media professionals and citizens. To all those who inform the nation every day, your work is essential, and your role in shaping our future remains indispensable.
