Today, as Seychelles joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day, we pause as a nation to reflect on the extraordinary role women play in shaping our families, our communities and the future of our country.
In Seychelles, women have always stood at the heart of our society. They are our leaders, educators, caregivers, entrepreneurs and innovators. Within our homes, workplaces and institutions, Seychellois women continue to demonstrate remarkable strength, resilience and wisdom as they contribute to the development and progress of our nation.
Women remain central figures in our society, and their role in shaping our country can never be understated. Across Seychelles, many families are led by devoted mothers who work tirelessly to raise the next generation while navigating the challenges of everyday life. Today we pause to recognise and salute these women for their tenacity, resilience and unwavering dedication to their families and to our country.
Over the past decades, Seychelles has made significant progress in advancing the empowerment of women and ensuring that they have the opportunity to contribute fully to national development. Today we see women occupying leadership positions across government and throughout our institutions.
This progress is reflected across ministries and within key decision-making roles in our public institutions. It is also reflected in the leadership of the National Assembly, where a capable Seychellois woman heads the third branch of government as Speaker. Women also serve with distinction in senior executive roles and across sectors that continue to drive the development of our nation.
In education, women play a defining role in shaping the future of Seychelles. Many of our schools are led by dedicated female educators and administrators who continue to guide and inspire the next generation.
Within our health sector, women remain the backbone of service delivery. They form the majority of our nursing professionals and increasingly stand alongside men as locally trained doctors and specialists serving communities across our islands.
Within our workplaces and institutions, we are privileged to work alongside talented and dedicated women whose leadership, professionalism and ideas strengthen our organisations and enrich decision-making. Their contributions continue to build stronger communities throughout Seychelles.
While we celebrate the progress that has been achieved, we must also recognise that there is still work to be done. As a society, we must continue to ensure that Seychellois women are supported in reaching their full potential and that barriers to their advancement are addressed.
We must also recognise the many women who dedicate their lives to caring for others, whether raising children with special needs, caring for elderly parents, or supporting family members who require constant attention. Their contributions are essential to the wellbeing and stability of our society.
In our workplaces, pregnancy and motherhood must never be viewed as obstacles to opportunity. Women who are expecting children or raising young families deserve respect, understanding and equal opportunity within the workforce. Employers and institutions must continue to foster supportive environments that recognise both the professional contributions and family responsibilities of women.
The government remains committed to empowering women as a central pillar of national development. Through continued investment in education, mentorship and policies that address the social challenges faced by women and girls, we aim to ensure that every woman in Seychelles is respected, supported and empowered to realise her full potential.
To all the women across our beautiful islands, and to the many women who contribute daily to the progress of our institutions, communities and families, we express our deepest gratitude.
Your strength, wisdom and unwavering dedication continue to guide Seychelles forward.
Today we celebrate you.
Today we honour you.
Happy International Women’s Day.
