SADC Electoral Commission Forum Holds 26th Annual General Conference

The 26th Annual General Conference of the Electoral Commission Forum of SADC Countries (ECF-SADC) was officially inaugurated this morning by President Wavel Ramkalawan at Eden Bleu Hotel in Seychelles. This year’s conference focuses on the theme “Digitalisation and Youth Engagement in Electoral Processes in the SADC Region.”

The event gathers electoral management bodies from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to explore innovative strategies for modernizing electoral administration. Central to discussions is the pivotal role of technology in engaging young voters and ensuring credible, transparent elections in an increasingly digitalized world.

In his opening address, the Chairperson of the Seychelles Electoral Commission, Danny Lucas described the conference as a platform to "exchange ideas, engage in dynamic discussions, and forge partnerships that will strengthen our collective ability to adapt to the dynamic electoral landscape across the SADC Region." He stressed on the importance of modernizing electoral processes while staying aligned with strategic goals for democratic governance.

President Ramkalawan expressed pride in Seychelles hosting this prestigious event, emphasizing the critical role of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) in upholding democratic integrity across the SADC region. Addressing the conference theme, the President highlighted emerging challenges in electoral processes and urged participants to collaborate on identifying key trends and innovative solutions. He also reaffirmed Seychelles’ dedication to advancing digital transformation and fostering youth participation in electoral systems.

Over the coming days, participants will engage in deliberations aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and developing strategies to strengthen democratic processes. Nations will share experiences, insights, and solutions to address the challenges posed by digitalization and evolving voter demographics.

The conference drew a distinguished audience, including former Seychelles President Danny Faure, electoral officials from SADC countries, Chief Electoral Officer Manuella Amesbury, members of the Electoral Commission Board, political party representatives, members of the Seychelles National Youth Assembly, and other dignitaries.
