Johannesburg, South Africa, 05 November: Ahead of receiving the 2024 Africa Freedom Prize, President Wavel Ramkalawan of Seychelles engaged with the press at a briefing hosted by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Sub-Saharan Africa at their headquarters in Johannesburg. The event offered an opportunity for the President to discuss his leadership philosophy and the remarkable trajectory of Seychelles’ economic and social transformation.
Since its transition from a socialist one-party state to a multi-party democracy in 1993, Seychelles has emerged as a trailblazer in economic liberalization and sustainable development.
Today, it ranks first in governance on the African continent according to the Mo Ibrahim Index. President Ramkalawan highlighted Seychelles’ journey, showcasing its balanced approach to economic growth and social welfare. Under his leadership, Seychelles has continued to strengthen its tourism sector, attract foreign investment, and lead the charge in environmental sustainability, with the nation also holding Africa’s top position on the United Nations’ Human Development Index.
The briefing attracted extensive media interest, with President Ramkalawan also taking the opportunity to meet with FNF staff, furthering ties and sharing insights on Seychelles’ forward-thinking policies.
