President Ramkalawan Hosts Reception in Honour of International Day of Older Persons

President Wavel Ramkalawan, accompanied by First Lady Mrs. Linda Ramkalawan, hosted a special reception at State House yesterday evening in celebration of the International Day of Older Persons. The event gathered elderly citizens from every district and care homes across the country.

Marking the 34th observance of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, this year’s theme, “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide,” highlighted both national and global efforts to enhance the quality of life for the elderly. The theme reflects the government's ongoing commitment to ensuring dignity, care, and respect for the aging population.

In his address, President Ramkalawan expressed profound gratitude to the senior citizens, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the nation. He reiterated the government's pledge to provide essential services and infrastructure to support the elderly.

"It is because of each one of you that we are now able to live in a peaceful society, reigned with love and care for each other as we contribute in our individual capacity to our nation," stated the President. He called upon the younger generation, to repay this debt by caring for the elderly with the utmost respect, while learning from the wisdom they impart.

Minister for Youth, Sports, and Family, Marie-Celine Zialor, encouraged the elderly to embrace their later years with grace and mindfulness. She stressed the importance of health and well-being in maintaining dignity in old age, urging them to make thoughtful choices. "Make smarter choices, and take care of your health to ensure you age with dignity and in good health," Minister Zialor advised.

A notable moment during the ceremony was the cutting of the celebration cake by President Ramkalawan, Mrs. Ramkalawan, and centenarian  Mrs. Miette Dorothe, followed by artistic and cultural performances by elderly citizens. Entertainment was further enhanced by Band Metis and vocalist Brian Matombe.

The reception was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including Vice President  Mr. Ahmed Afif, Speaker of the National Assembly Hon Roger Mancienne, President of the Court of Appeal Justice Anthony Fernando, Designated Minister Mr. Jean-Francois Ferrari, Leader of Government Business, Hon Bernard Georges, Members of the National Assembly, Cabinet Ministers, District Administrators, and senior citizens from all over the country.
