Cabinet Business- Wednesday, 28th September 2022

President Wavel Ramkalawan chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet today, Wednesday 28th September at which a number of policy and legal memoranda were considered.

As part of Government’s plan to address the numerous challenges at the makeshift market at Roche Caiman, Cabinet approved for the relocation of the market situated to the green space opposite the Roche Caiman Petrol Station.  The new Farmers’ Market will be more hygienic, organised and sustainable. 

Cabinet approved the proposal to make it a requirement for grocery retail outlets to use cash register and point of sale system in their business.  These system will be eventually linked to the Seychelles Revenue Commission to allow for greater management of tax revenue.  The necessary regulations will be drafted to become effective on 1st January 2023.  Cabinet requested that immediately merchants should take steps to prepare for implementation of the system as no grace period will be given.

Cabinet approved for the Seychelles Revenue Commission to subscribe to the African Tax Administration Forum, Women in Tax Network (AWITN).  The Network represents and connects the women of Africa working in taxation in government, the private sector, academia and civil society. The aim of the network is to further discuss the effects of tax policy on gender equality and to empower women working in taxation. The membership will bring several benefits including training and staff development.

Cabinet approved the seventh progress report on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child for submission to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Cabinet approved for Seychelles to maintain its membership within the Open Government Partnership.  The Open Government Partnership (OGP), an international organisation, was set up in 2011 as an organization of reformers working to transform how government serves its citizens, promotes transparency, participatory, inclusive and accountable governance.

Cabinet was provided with an in-depth overview of all the work undertaken by the National AIDS Council (NAC) during the year 2021. Collaborative work was undertaken with its different stakeholders and partners to accomplish the national goals and vision.
