Her Worship Natasha Burian sworn-in as the new Master of the Supreme Court of Seychelles

Her Worship Natasha Burian was sworn-in as the new Master of the Supreme Court of Seychelles yesterday morning, in the presence of President Wavel Ramkalawan during a swearing-in Ceremony held at State House.

The President appointed Her Worship Natasha Burian following recommendations made by the Constitutional Appointments Authority as provided for in Article 127 of the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles.

During the ceremony, His Worship took two oaths; the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution and the Judicial Oath.

Delivering his remarks at the event, President Ramkalawan congratulated and wished Mrs. Burian courage in the new tasks bestowed on her. The President commended her and expressed how proud he is to see another Seychellois rise up the professional ladder.

“We are confident that you have been prepared for the post that you are taking and that through your abilities and professionalism you will do our judiciary proud. Today we see a young woman taking on this responsibility and we feel reassured that our judicial system in the future continues to uphold the principles of justice and that we can rest assured that the role of the judiciary will be one as cited in our Constitution and one that future generations will be proud of,” said the President

President Ramkalawan also addressed the Judiciary in relation to the sentencing policy. As the government continues to fight crimes that are on the rise in the country, he urged the Judiciary to review its sentencing policy so as to present the country as one which is serious in dealing with crimes and protect all assets of Seychelles. 

Ms. Natasha Burian holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Reading, in the United Kingdom, and was admitted to the Bar in July 2011.  On 12th May 2010, she was admitted as a Member of the Honorable Society of the Inner Temple.

 In September 2011 she commenced her Pupillage in Seychelles. She was admitted as an Attorney at Law in the Republic of Seychelles on the 13th November 2013. She was later appointed as Notary on the 16th November 2015.

Ms. Burian was sworn in as Magistrate in May 2017, a post she has occupied until to date. She has also served as Chairperson of the Rent Board, Employment Tribunal, Mental Health Care Tribunal and also as Vice-Chairperson of the Family Tribunal. She is currently undertaking Masters in Law at the University of London with specialisation in Criminology and international Criminal Justice.

Also present for the swearing-in ceremony was the First Lady, Mrs. Linda Ramkalawan, Vice-President Ahmed Afif, the Chief Justice, Justice Rony Govinden, the Attorney General, Mr. Frank Ally, Secretary of State Cabinet Affairs, Mr. Mohammed Afif, Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Fiona Robinson, Members of Constitutional Appointments Authority and relatives of the Her Worship Natasha Burian.
