PRESIDENT MICHEL AND LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION MEET

President James Michel met with the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Mr. David Pierre, this morning at State House, in line with their agreement to meet once a month to discuss issues of national importance.

The President and the Leader of the Opposition discussed the economic situation of the country as well as the measures which have been undertaken to mitigate the effects of the rising costs of living. Mr. Pierre has expressed his concern to the President about the issue of drugs ones that he feels is affecting the country and should be addressed severely.

They agreed the Government should do its maximum to prevent a further rise  of costs in the country, particularly in light of the President’s announcements on taxation policy in his National Day Address this week. They also discussed at length the tourism industry and how the Seychellois people can benefit from its revenue as well as foreign exchange coming in. Mr. Pierre have also proposed that improvement can be made in mismanagement of resources and money by Public Sectors.

Mr. Pierre also discussed the motion on education which had had brought to the National Assembly but did not receive majority support, and said that the Government needed to nevertheless undertake further reforms of the education system.

The President and the Leader of the Opposition concluded the meeting by agreeing that there needs to be greater efficiency in customs and revenue systems of the Government so that a greater fiscal outcome is achieved and mismanagement is removed from the system.
