Message from President James Michel to the king of Norway, sent on 24th July 2011, following the armed attacks which killed nearly a hundred people two days before.

"His Majesty Harald V
King of Norway
Kingdom of Norway

Your Majesty,

It is with profound sadness and shock that we learned of the attack on the nation of Norway. We deeply regret the loss of life and injuries resulting from the explosion and armed attacks by a gunman.  Our thoughts are with the people of Norway at this time of bereavement.

In the wake of this terrible tragedy, the Government and the people of Seychelles, join me in expressing our heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to you and to the people of Norway as well as to the families of the victims who are suffering from this atrocious act of terror.

Be assured your Majesty, of our utmost condemnation of such appalling and heinous crimes of violence.  These attacks are a harsh reminder of the peril the world faces from terrorism and the forces of intolerance.

Norway's efforts and leadership in Sustainable Development and environmental protection have offered a beacon of hope to many nations around the world.  This attack against Norway, is also an attack on the values of peaceful development that Norway has never failed to champion.  Such attacks will never dampen the resolve or the support of Seychelles, or the Seychellois people, for Norway's efforts and leadership.  On the contrary, such events reinforce our belief in the need for the world to continue to fight intolerance in all its forms and wherever it may exist.

Please accept once again your Majesty, our wishes of sympathy and solidarity during this moment of national grief, and the assurances of my highest consideration."

James A. Michel
President
Republic of Seychelles
