Commonwealth Day Message by President Wavel Ramkalawan
13 March 2023 | Foreign Affairs
Today, Seychelles joins members of the Commonwealth family around the world in celebrating ‘Commonwealth Day’.
A decade on from the historic signing of the Commonwealth Charter, Seychelles remains firmly committed to the shared values and aspirations enshrined therein. We reaffirm our determination in observing the principles of democracy, tolerance, rule of law, respect for human rights, and peaceful co-existence for the greater good of society and the betterment of ourr people.
Delivering a future of prosperity requires unwavering commitments to the ideals of mutual respect and shared responsibility. As leaders of the Commonwealth, we have a moral obligation to offer each and every individual a future replete with opportunities for personal development and growth. My hope is that through our Charter, people across the Commonwealth are able to realise their goals and aspirations.
Seychelles is committed to upholding the principles of the Commonwealth, as we continue to strive towards building a more inclusive and sustainable future for our people. We are grateful for the support and assistance provided by the Commonwealth in areas such as education, health, and economic development.
The Commonwealth provides us with a platform to collaborate and work towards the common good of our people. It enables us to strengthen our bonds of friendship and cooperation, and benefit from the shared experiences and knowledge of our fellow member states.
One of the important goals of the Commonwealth is access to modern technologies and communication. This has radically improved our inter and global connectedness.
Seychelles, like many other nations, is undergoing a digital transformation, encouraging innovation and seeking to strengthen connections within our communities and to the global world; all while ensuring that our people remain at the centre of our country’s development agenda. Of equal importance to us, therefore, is the provision of a safe digital space - of solidarity - where we can appreciate our similarities and tolerate our differences.
Our unique place in the Commonwealth is one where our relative geographic remoteness is of no great concern, shrinking ever further as we build greater connectivity to the outside world. Our membership thus amplifies our voice as a Small Island Developing State urging for stronger consensus on climate change mitigation initiatives. Our family of nations remains at the forefront of our mission to adopt and implement a Multi-dimensional Vulnerability Index to ensure that no one is left behind.
In the Commonwealth, we have a dedicated partner, firm in its convictions to promote a global development agenda that brings opportunities for all of its member states.
As we celebrate Commonwealth Day, let us reflect on the progress we have made together, and renew our commitment to working towards a brighter future for all our citizens. Let us continue to collaborate and support each other, as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
I wish you all a happy Commonwealth Day!
