Cabinet Decisions

Cabinet Business - Wednesday 14th January 2026

Vice President Sebastien Pillay chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet today Wednesday 14th January, during which a number of legal and policy memoranda were approved.

Cabinet approved the Public Holidays (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to add 1st February as “Abolition of Slavery Day” in the list of national public holidays. This means 1st February will officially become a public holiday across Seychelles, in recognition of the historic end of slavery and the importance of commemorating this event nationwide.

Cabinet approved the proposal for Seychelles to host the Southern and Eastern Africa Chief Justices’ Forum and the Southern & Eastern Africa Judicial Administrators’ Association Management Committee Meetings and associated Leadership Training for Chief Justices in April 2026.

Cabinet approved the repeal and replacement of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, 1994.  The current legislation is outdated, does not provide for specialist registration, fails to reflect modern clinical practice, and contains weak regulatory, disciplinary, and governance mechanisms.

Cabinet approved for a delayed one-time payment of USD 100,000 as seed funding to the African Medicines Agency (AMA).   The African Medicines Agency (AMA) is a specialised agency of the African Union (AU) established to improve the regulation of medicines and medical products across Africa. Seychelles has a binding treaty obligation under Article 26(2) of the AMA Treaty to contribute to the Agency’s budget.
