Today, as Seychelles joins the global community in celebrating International Teachers’ Day under UNESCO’s theme, we reflect on the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of our nation. This year’s call to reverse the global teacher shortage is not just a challenge, but a moral imperative. It reminds us that the quality of education we aspire to depends on the strength, support and sustainability of our teaching workforce.
Teachers are more than educators. They are mentors, guides and nation-builders. Every lesson they deliver, every child they inspire, contributes to the social fabric and progress of Seychelles. We must ensure that the teaching profession remains one of dignity, purpose and pride.
In response to this global call, Seychelles has taken decisive steps to empower and elevate our educators. The Professional Teacher Competency Standards now provide a clear and aspirational framework for growth, recognition and excellence. This is not merely about accountability it is about honouring the professionalism of our teachers and ensuring they receive the respect and support they deserve.
We are also advancing the School Autonomy Project, enabling schools to innovate and respond to the unique needs of their communities. Through continuous professional development, pathways to higher qualifications and recognition of prior learning, we are building a system where teachers can thrive throughout their careers.
On this special day, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every teacher across Seychelles from those just beginning their journey to those who have dedicated decades to nurturing our children. Your resilience, your commitment and your love for education inspire us all.
Let us continue to walk together, ensuring that every child in Seychelles receives a quality education, and that every teacher is valued, respected and supported. The education and the future we want begins with the teachers we need.
Happy Teachers’ Day.
