Message of Condolence following the passing of most loved Seychellois Artist Mr. Joe Samy

The Office of the President expresses profound sadness and extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the artistic community of Seychelles following the passing of Mr Joe Samy, a distinguished and celebrated figure in the nation’s cultural and artistic landscape.

Mr Samy was honoured with the  Republic of Seychelles Medal of Merit, National Award 2023, and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. He was a beloved Seychellois artist whose immense talent, creativity, and passion helped define and elevate Seychelles’ music.

His work, deeply rooted in Seychellois identity, captured the essence of our people, our environment, and our way of life. Over the decades, his art inspired countless individuals and contributed immensely to the preservation and promotion of our cultural heritage.

In a message sent on behalf of the country and in his personal capacity, the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan, paid tribute to Mr Samy:

“Seychelles has lost one of its most iconic and gifted sons. Joe Samy’s extraordinary contribution to the cultural and artistic development of our nation will forever be remembered and cherished. His passion, his artistic soul, and his love for our islands were vividly expressed in every strum of his guitar or note of his harmonica. On behalf of the people of Seychelles and in my own name, I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and all those who knew and loved him. May his spirit live on through the legacy he has left us.”

At this time of mourning, the nation joins in honouring a man who dedicated his life to creativity, cultural expression, and the enrichment of Seychelles’ artistic heritage.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
