President’s Message on Health Workers Day 2025

World Health Day and Health Workers Day 2025 on 7th April is a paramount occasion for honouring the invaluable contributions of health professionals, who are the foundation of our nation’s health system. This year’s theme, “Healthy Beginnings and Hopeful Futures,” also reflects the Government's shared vision for Seychelles, where every individual has access to the highest standard of care from the very start of life, setting the stage for a healthy life and a prosperous future.

During a recent visit to one of our health centres, I witnessed first-hand the accolades that patients heap on health workers for their unwavering dedication. I met a young couple who shared their gratitude for the care they received from our doctors, nurses, and support staff. They not only provided medical assistance but also offered much-needed emotional support during the couple’s journey into parenthood. It was a humbling experience that reinforced my belief in the importance of our health workers; they are not just caregivers; they are indispensable pillars of strength for families and communities.

In our country, conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases affect both young and older populations, creating considerable strain on our nation and its health system and resulting in premature loss of functionality, productivity, and life.

As the Government confronts the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, health workers stand firm. Through their dedication and compassion, they lay the groundwork for healthier communities and brighter futures for all.

Health workers are truly indispensable. They work tirelessly on the front lines of primary health care and specialized hospital care, undertaking extensive responsibilities that span preventive care, early diagnosis, and the management of chronic and acute conditions.
In recognition of these challenges and the critical role of health workers, the Government is actively strengthening the healthcare system and supporting health workers with the necessary resources and training. The Government is now focused on developing Seychelles' new Human Resources for Health Strategy to ensure that there is a sufficient quantity and quality of professionals to meet the evolving health needs of the population.
The Government is also investing in modern healthcare infrastructure because it values health workers. The renovation of the National Institute for Health and Social Studies has renewed the hope of aspiring young health professionals. The construction of the new hospital at La Digue has already improved the quality of care on the island, and very soon, dialysis will be introduced there. New health centres at Baie Lazare and Ile Soleil are being built. The Government has recognized the need to elevate advanced care by investing heavily in the construction of a new hospital for Seychelles. This project is becoming a closer reality day by day.

All these efforts enhance the health system, improve the work environment and job satisfaction of health workers, and bolster the ability to serve communities.

On World Health Day and Health Workers Day 2025, let us take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication of health workers. Their commitment and compassion are essential to building a healthier future for everyone. Thank you for all that you do. Happy World Health Day and Health Workers Day 2025.
