The biennial Honorary Consuls Conference kicked off today at the Savoy Hotel and Spa, with President Wavel Ramkalawan as the guest of honour. The event, themed "The Honorary Consuls: Our Partners in Advancing the Sustainable Development Agenda of Seychelles," was preceded by a reception hosted by the President and First Lady at State House yesterday evening.

The opening ceremony began with a moment of silence, honoring Honorary Consuls who have passed away and acknowledging those who have retired from service. This year's conference provides a platform to address critical topics requiring collective action, such as diaspora engagement, maritime safety, investment opportunities, and economic resilience.

In his keynote address, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, praised the vital role of Honorary Consuls in Seychelles' diplomatic relations. "You are invaluable partners in our collective efforts. We gather to celebrate our achievements and renew our dedication to Seychelles," he said. The Minister underscored the importance of these diplomatic ties in confronting global challenges like maritime security, including threats from piracy, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.

Minister Radegonde also urged Honorary Consuls to enhance their engagement with local communities through the "Adopt a District" initiative, which seeks to bridge the gap between foreign policy and the everyday lives of Seychellois citizens.

A notable highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of long-serving Honorary Consuls. Among those honored were Mr. Maximilian Hunzinger, Honorary Consul General in Frankfurt, Germany, who has served for 31 years; Mr. Loucas Elinnas, Honorary Consul in Greece, with 27 years of service; and, in absentia, Mr. Joselito Campos, Honorary Consul General in the Philippines, with 23 years. Mr. Maxim Behar, Honorary Consul General in Bulgaria, and Professor Nikolaus Fouchs, Honorary Consul General in Berlin, Germany, were both recognized for 20 years of service.

The ceremony featured a stirring patriotic performance by the Mozaik Band and was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Seychellois Ambassadors, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Honorary Consuls based in Seychelles, and other distinguished guests.
