Cabinet Business - Wednesday 21st September 2022

Vice President Ahmed Afif chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet today, Wednesday 21st September at which a number of policy and legal memoranda were considered.

Cabinet approved the Broadcasting and Telecommunications (Quality of Service) Regulations, 2022.  These regulations are in line with international best practices.  The aim is to measure and publish the quality of service parameters relating to provision of Internet, subscription television and telephones services provided by telecommunication and subscription television operators.  This will allow customers to have a clear picture of the performance of the telecommunication and subscription television operators, which in turn will allow them to make informed choices of service providers.  It is believed that the regulations will lead to improvement in the quality of telecommunication and broadcasting services in the country.

Cabinet was informed of decision of the National Arts and Crafts Council (NACC) to delist the Theatre des Palmes Building as a national monument.  The building which is situated at Mont Fleuri has been declared irreparable.  Cabinet has in principle agreed to the need for a new performing arts building.  The NACC has been tasked to develop a proposed concept design for a new performing arts building with clear costing for further consideration by Cabinet.

Cabinet was briefed on the decision of the Ministry of Health to offer the Pfizer-BioNTechCovid-19 vaccine to children aged 5 to 11 years old.  Previously, the Ministry of Health had been administering Pfizer vaccines to children from 12 years old only.  Cabinet noted that a vaccinated population of children will have direct health benefits to the children as well as minimise disruption to their education.

Further details to the media will be provided by the relevant Ministry.
