Cabinet Business - Wednesday, 17th November 2021

President Wavel Ramkalawan chaired a scheduled meeting of the Cabinet today, Wednesday 17th November, at which a number of legal and policy memoranda were considered.

Cabinet was briefed on results of negotiations undertaken with the European Union on the subject of payment of seamen who worked on board EU purse seiners between the years 2005 to 2013.  Cabinet approved the proposed schedule for the payment of the relevant seamen before the end of December 2021.

Cabinet approved for the Ile Du Port Handling Services Ltd (IPHS) Quay to be designated as a landing site for the export of fishery products. 

Cabinet also approved for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Seychelles Investment Board (SIB) and the Economic Development Board of Mauritius.  The MoU which is a follow up from the visit of President Wavel Ramkalawan to Mauritius in December 2020 will allow for enhanced cooperation between the two organisations and to explore investment opportunities for Seychellois and Mauritian investors.  The MoU makes provision for the establishment of the Mauritius Business Desk.

Cabinet approved amendments to the Tertiary Education Act which will include the reallocation of functions of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) to the Seychelles Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the Ministry of Education.  The review of the Tertiary Education Act is part of the general reform in the functions and roles of government agencies in the Education Sector portfolio which started in February 2021.  Cabinet was apprised of plans to develop a modern law to govern the tertiary education landscape.

Cabinet was briefed on a proposed short-to-medium term project to produce additional electricity for the country.
