President Wavel Ramkalawan received representatives of the National Muslim Council of Seychelles (NMCS) at State House this morning. Present for the courtesy call was the President of NMCS, Imam Idris Yusuf, the Vice-President of the council, Mr Ibrahim Afif and as the Administrator, Mr Imtiaz Hasan Umaji and Scholar, Imam Abu Anas Servina.
The purpose of the visit was to introduce the creation of the NMCS and brief the Head of State of the rationale of a council that now unites together the three main Islamic organisations in Seychelles under one umbrella; incorporating the Islamic Society of Seychelles, the Quaran and Sunnah Society of Seychelles and the Islamic Foundation of Seychelles.
The President welcomed the delegation and commended them in their efforts to work as a united front for the benefit of the Muslim community in Seychelles. President Ramkalawan reiterated the importance of the coexistence of various denominations in the country and layed emphasis on the importance of freedom of worship where all faiths are respected.
The meeting was also an opportunity for the delegation to present the President with a copy of their Constitution and list of Executive Committee members.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr Afif described their relations with the State as excellent and despite the long overdue meeting they were extremely satisfied with the discussions. He said that the President understands their position on various issues they have raised and has pledged his commitment for continued support on behalf of Government.
