Maputo, Mozambique, 20 May 2019: On the first day of his state visit to Mozambique, President Danny Faure met with the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Mr Filipe Nyusi, at the Office of the President yesterday morning.
The two heads of state engaged in a discussion focussed on re-affirming and solidifying the fraternal relations between Seychelles and Mozambique, discussing matters of common interest and charting a road map for growth and win-win collaborations between the two nations.
The state visit by President Faure serves to accentuate the joint commitment of the two states sharing the Indian Ocean and the African Continent.
During discussions President Faure seized the opportunity to reaffirm Seychelles' solidarity with Mozambique, following the recent tragic natural disasters that resulted in destruction and loss of lives. He reteirated Seychelles’ commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation for mutual benefits to both peoples.
"I am convinced that this will further serve to reinforce the warm friendship we have shared since the establishment of diplomatic ties in August 1983. I am looking forward to engaging with different officials and stakeholders on different issues of shared interest," said President Faure.
Following the tête-à-tête, the Presidential delegation engaged in bilateral discussions in the presence of their relevant counterparts to discuss boosting cooperation, such as aligning blue economy initiatives with those of the region. Other areas of cooperation discussed included security and defence, the sharing of experience and development of the tourism industry, agriculture and food security, energy, and exchanges in the field of culture. In the latter, the Presidents noted with much appreciation, the ancestral lineage that has led to the current Seychellois nation where some of the Seychellois descendants are from Mozambique.
The state visit also saw the signing of three main agreements between the two countries. In the presence of the two heads of state, a General Cooperation Agreement was signed by the Seychelles Minister for Finance, Trade, Investment and Economic Planning, Mr Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, and the Mozambique Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr Jose Antonio Pacheco. The second agreement signed was the Air Services Agreement signed by Minister Lalanne on behalf of Seychelles Government and the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication, Mr Manuela Joaquin Rebelo, followed by the third cooperation agreement in the field of Security and Public Order signed by Minister Lalanne and the Mozambique Minister for Interior, Mr Jaime Basilo Monteiro.
Prior to his meetings held at the Office of the President, President Faure also participated in a wreath laying ceremony in the morning at the Mozambique Hero's Square where he had the honour to lay a commemorative wreath as a sign of respect to the heroes of the nation. President also had the opportunity to meet some Mozambican veterans during the wreath laying ceremony.
