August 12, 2011 -- The swearing in of members of the newly created Electoral Commission was completed this morning when Mr Gerard Lafortune took the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution and Oath of Office before President James Michel at State House.
Mr Lafortune was not in the country when the chairman, Mr Hendrick Gappy, and three other members, Mr Beatty Hoareau, Mr Bernard Elizabeth and Mrs Marie Therese Purvis, were sworn in on August 2. Â
Today's ceremony was attended by the Attorney General, Mr Ronny Govinden, and Electoral Commission chairman Gappy.
President Michel congratulated Mr Lafortune on his taking of office.
The President appointed the Electoral Commission on Thursday 28th July, following the nomination of persons by the Constitutional Appointments Authority (CAA) in accordance with Article 115A of the Constitution. All the appointees had applied to the CAA to be considered for the post.
