Concerns regarding the formation of new religious entities without adequate scrutiny or accountability topped the agenda as President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr. Patrick Herminie, held his first official meeting with the Seychelles Interfaith Council (SIFCO) at State House.
The high-level engagement marking the first formal exchange between President Herminie and the council focused on preserving the integrity of religious practice in Seychelles while reinforcing national unity and social cohesion.
The eight-member SIFCO delegation was led by Chairperson Bishop Danny Elizabeth and comprised Fr. Eric Leon, Vice Chair; Fr. Sergios Janosevic; Mr. Kandasamy Natesan; Pastor Hermitte Freminot; Mr. Jean Claude Matombe; Mr. Jerry Souris; and Mrs. Ruby Pardiwalla, Secretary.
President Herminie expressed appreciation for SIFCO's steadfast commitment to fostering dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect among Seychelles' diverse religious communities. He underscored the vital role that faith leaders play in promoting peace, guiding ethical reflection, and supporting national development.
The President affirmed that unity remains a central pillar of his administration's vision, noting that the moral voice of faith-based organisations is essential in nurturing compassion, understanding, and shared responsibility within society.
During the discussions, SIFCO elaborated on its concerns about the increasing emergence of religious groups operating without sufficient oversight. Members cautioned that, in some instances, vulnerable individuals may be exposed to misleading practices. The council proposed that prior to the registration of any new religious organisation, consultation be undertaken with SIFCO to enable it to provide informed recommendations and safeguard established standards.
SIFCO further proposed the establishment of a formal liaison mechanism between the council and State House to facilitate regular consultations on matters of national importance.
The council also highlighted its ongoing national peace campaign, which was intensified during last year's election period and had a meaningful impact in promoting calm and unity across the country. Building on this initiative, SIFCO proposed the introduction of a symbolic one-minute national observance of peace as an expression of collective solidarity.
In preparation for the forthcoming 50th anniversary of Independence, President Herminie proposed the active involvement of SIFCO in the commemorative programme, including a spiritual march during the first month of celebrations and a national blessing to be led by the council on the evening of the principal Independence event.
Discussions further addressed SIFCO's aspiration to establish a dedicated training and formation centre that would also serve as accommodation for visiting missionaries. The proposed project, estimated at approximately SCR 20 million, is envisioned as a long-term investment in spiritual development and interfaith collaboration.
Responsible use of social media and digital platforms particularly among youth, also featured in discussions, with both parties recognising the importance of cybersecurity awareness and digital literacy. Separately, the meeting touched on road traffic safety and the prevention of fatalities involving young people, with motorcycles identified as a particular area of concern.
President Herminie underscored that State House is open to constructive engagement with all partners dedicated to the common good, affirming that national progress must be anchored in unity of purpose and respect for Seychelles' diverse cultural and spiritual heritage.
