On the occasion of Social Workers’ Day, I pay tribute to the dedicated social workers across our nation whose daily work brings hope, protection, and support to the most vulnerable members of our society. Through your compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment, you play a vital role in strengthening families, safeguarding communities, and upholding the dignity and wellbeing of all Seychellois in Seychelles.
This year’s theme, “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” reminds us that building a stronger and more cohesive nation requires solidarity, empathy, and shared responsibility. The spirit of harambee—pulling together for the common good—is reflected in your daily work as you support individuals and families in overcoming hardship and rebuilding their lives.
Our government recognises that mental health challenges and substance abuse remain serious concerns and significant sources of social distress in our society. In response, we continue to strengthen the national institutional framework through the reintroduction of the Agency for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation and the establishment of the Seychelles Mental Health Agency. These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to coordinated prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and mental health support programmes that promote recovery, restore dignity, and open new pathways for those affected.
I also acknowledge the important work of professionals and organisations supporting persons with disabilities, whose dedication helps advance inclusion, respect, and equal opportunity for all.
To our young people, I encourage you to consider social work as a rewarding and impactful career. Choosing this path allows you to serve your community, bring hope to those in need, and contribute directly to building a more caring, inclusive, and resilient Seychelles. Your energy, ideas, and dedication can help shape a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
To all social workers, I offer this encouragement: remain steadfast in your compassion and never underestimate the impact of the care you provide. In moments when your work may feel demanding, remember that every act of kindness, every word of reassurance, and every life you help guide toward hope contributes to building a stronger and more caring nation.
